In the Halls of DHF
Chapter 1

In the dank halls of the DHF Base…

The corridors where grand and dim, but had a certain wonder that would enchant the onlooker. Grand tapestries laced the halls, chandeliers hung on high ceilings like majestic birds they shed their radiance on their guests. The fierce weather of the Shiverpeaks howled outside clings to the walls with a juvenile’s embrace…this made the walls let out a small whine every now and then. A meeting was called and all gathered in the court. At the head of which were two thrones, the court brimmed with excitement for their heroes to return from their deadly journeys. Hunting was a sport here; each hunter would receive a task and would compete to impress the leader of the homestead. The air was soggy with mead, and lively with music, suitors chased after maidens, child scampered in and under the table, happy and joyous was the occasion…. all eagerly…. waiting for their heroes.
A women rose above the crowd, her hair was long and curly. The glistened a vibrant blonde; her eyes were a deep blue a calm as the Sea of Sorrows . She was tall and fairly built her face was round, and her glaze was stern. The voiced that bounced around the halls moments before all paused to give notice to this women, Blonde.
The doors to the hall opened and a group of seven stepped through its maul.
“So I see you all must be only survivors,” Blonde started, “pity out of thirty contestants that only three would return I guess the tasks I have given were too hard for them.”
The group huddled close together; they didn’t take much pride in this contest, but only saw it as a way out from their prison. The each “owed” a debt to the leader of DHF, Blonde; their only way out was these tasks she sent them on. Though the crowd cheered them on throughout these obstacles, the group knew it was only a means to make money. Blonde step forth and did a quick role call, and then when on to check to see if each had completed their given task. One had to escort the leader of the Black Tide Guild to an alliance meeting, having feared attack of corsairs. Another had to bring back a jar of prismatic ooze. One even had to brave the sulfuric dunes of the Desolation to deliver a message to a lost one in the Realm of Torment. It was obvious Blonde was not trying to free these people but rather profit from them, and to reinforce her leadership. Before the group of seven stood, heads staring at the grounds.
BOOM! Half of the court's western wall immediately collapsed, the night painted the silhouette of a grand warrior. The warrior took a step closer, the eyes of the crowd shifted to the figure quickly as a gasp overtook the crowd. Blonde stepped forward to meet the figure, her eyes thrashing in rage, her lips were stapled, and her glare pierced through the shady figure. Then with another step the warrior came into the light. Twas, Anna…
She spoke with a thick accent ,“I am sorry I am late, but getting one of Frost Maul’s babies aight that easy, but I got one! Two matter of fact, well actually only one now dear…. couldn’t help myself… I am just a sucker for scrambled eggs.”

The Mission
Chapter 2

A women over a body....
a tethered corpse…
as she prays….
tears mix with blood…

“So there I was, when ol’ Frostmaul reared up! Ready to strike”, Anna started; the crowd captivated by her every word. “Then, BAM like a bloodsucker out of the Mists, she took out one of the men in my party.”
The crowd gasped, and cheered at various times throughout Anna’s tale. The festivities in the hall continued late into the night and at last everyone begun to creep back to their dorms. Anna sought Blonde out in the rush; she was perched on her throne at the head of the hall…a tiny object clasped in her grip.
“So missy,” Anna started, “from what I understand I only have two more things to do till I’m out of this dump and you give back what’s mine. What’s next?”
Blonde smiled, with her hand still clenched, “Your awfully eager.”
“Now Blonde”, Anna projected, “ you know the only reason why I haven’t done away with you and this whole place is cause our deal.”
“Oh what deal?”
Anna glared, Blonde shrugged innocently. “You must mean this.”
Will that Blonde unclenched her hand and displayed a small golden locket. She took a moment to get lost in its beauty as she dangled it in front of her face; the locket but a golden minnow swimming slowly between two blue ponds. She stopped and then returned the locket to her pocket and she turned her attention back toward Anna. By now Anna had redrawn her sword, and the guards near the throne had come to immediate attention.
“No one has completed as many challenges as you have Anna. Your reputation is giving our fair hall tons of recognition, and money. It would be a shame to have you leave us so quickly…you must understand how much we need you here.”
Anna, with sword still in hand, stopped poised among the leader of DHF and her guards as if ready to attack them…still she did not mutter a word.
“Well let’s see, I’ve heard of a demon terrorizing the country sides of Kryta. Perhaps your services are needed there”, Blonde said beginning to make her departure.
“I’ll be back in a day”
Anna started out of the main hall. While walking down the corridors many came to congratulate her, but she paid them no mind. She continued through the maze of halls and stairways until she came to the main entrance. As she approached she heard the muttering of the two guards tending the door.
“Lady Blonde has been sending a lot of orders through lately, more and more people dying as a part of her hair brain tasks”, the guard mumbled motioning in a carriage of supplies.
“Yea, but its all in the best interest of the guild…these tasks make sure I can feed my family”, Replied the other. The carriage came over the bridge, and begun its way down the hallway. Anna pressed herself behind a pillar.
“Quiet ones…”, said the first guard as the carriage started over the bridge. Anna struggled to get a glimpse but she couldn’t make the figure out. Slowly from the darkness she could make out details of the approaching shape. A short man clad in pitch-black armor mounted upon a drake lead the caravan…

Anna escaped into the night with her mission in mind.

To Tame A Demon
Chapter 3

A women over a body....
a tethered corpse…
as she prays….

tears mix with blood…

Hoping for another drop of life…
another breath of vitality…
salt crevices stain her face…
a brilliant light overwhelms her…

she gasps in awe…

Anna made off on her steed racing to the fair village that needed her help. The darkness of night enveloped her crusade. She rushed down the summits of the Shiver peaks to the land below. No sooner had the moon taken its place in the sky that Anna found herself with eyesight of the village. The night was still; she could see the villagers preparing to end their night. She scanned the forest with hawkeyed precision. She rode closer and closer to town until a small group of people came to greet her.
“Don’t go into that village miss it’s cursed”, shouted one of the men.
“Where do yaw plan on going”, Anna questioned bringing her horse to a stop.
“As far away from this village as possible, we’re going to a settlement just off the river”, said a woman holding a child.
Anna smiled, “when can I expect to see this demon?”
The villager opened his mouth to answer when a horrible scream came from the village. The group of man and women scattered, and one could see the embers of fires being over turned. Anna raced to the village; all the way she could hear the agonizing screeches for help. We she came upon the village half was in ruins, and she could see some villagers fleeing toward her. But their pursuer thought otherwise, with several quick slashes the ground was made drunk with their blood.
“Face me you beast”, Anna roared dismounting her steed.
In the dark she could see two green eyes hovering of over a gloomy mass, it took a step into the moonlight. It let out a high-pitched roar before charging toward. She braced for impact. The beast flung several yards into a hay bin. She scattered to get back up, but the beast merely knocked her down again.
“Is that the best you got”, Anna said, “ I’ve been beaten worse by a flock of sugar gnomes”.
The beast snarled, and clashed its teeth together. Anna motioned for the beast to come on. It broke into a frightening sprint and leapt high into the air with hopes of pouncing on the warrior. But Anna grabbed its paw and used its momentum to slam it on the ground. On its back, Anna grabbed one its limbs and forced it into submission. The beast yelped in pain before double backing and biting Anna’s hand. Anna jumped back in shock. The demon opened its mouth and let loose a plumb of fire. Anna, acting fast, managed to grab a shield from a corpse to protect her. The demon then tried to slash her with its sickle-like tail; Anna dodged its sweeps easily. When the tail came down once more Anna quickly withdrew her sword and sliced off the demon’s tail. The beast roared in pain and readied itself to spew another cloud of fire. Anna, seeing an opportunity, flung the shield towards the beast’s open maul. The collision brought the beast down to the ground. Anna walked up to the demon, struggling to walk, and wrestled it to the ground. With what strength it had left, it fought against Anna’s strength.
Anna snapped the demons neck.
“Well I came here with hopes of charming me a pet, but can’t charm a corpse”, she tossed the body aside. She stood up and looked at what remained of the village. There were still flames burning among the buildings. In the distance she heard a cry of pain. She put the cry out of her head and started to walk back to her horse. She heard the cry again, and this time it was much louder. She gazed over the carnage coldly until her eyes fixed on a small little girl. Anna gave in, and walked over to greet the girl.
“Hey there little one”, Anna held out her hand, but the little girl drew back.
“Don’t worry I won’t hurt ya”, Anna started, “unless you’re a demon then I’d have to kill you.”
The girl drew back even more. Little kid cant take a joke.
“So where’s your parents?”
The little girl didn’t answer.
“They go away?”
The little girl was still sobbing.
“Well I don’t have all day kid, you sticking with me or you going to wait until another beastie comes to take something else from you”, Anna said coldly. The little girl fought back another wave of tears and began to walk to Anna horse.
“That’s what I thought”, Anna savaged the ruins of the town for a few supplies before joining up with the girl at the horse.
“Do you have a name”, Anna said helping the girl onto the horse.
The little girl didn’t reply.
“I think that demon back there is hungry”, Anna glanced back casually.
The girl, shocked turned around, quickly realizing she was tricked. She then glazed into Anna’s eyes, she opened her mouth and out as smooth a silk she whispered her name.

“Kiera…”

Signet Of Hope
Chapter 4

A women over a body....
A tethered corpse…as she prays…
Tears mix with blood…

Hoping for another drop of life…
Another breath of vitality…
Salt crevices stain her face…

A brilliant light overwhelms her…
She gasps in awe…
A radiant and iridescent figure stepped toward her…
Its body flawless…wings abroad…
It held its hand out...

And the corpse began to reanimate…

“I heard there was a temple around here”, Anna said casually, “I’ma drop you off there. The monks will take care of you.”
Kiera turned to protest, “But I need to find my mom and brother…”
Anna rolled her eyes and adjusted her helm, “Why didn’t you mention that earlier?”
Kiera withdrew.

Anna brought the horse to a stop near a spring. It was midday in the Kryta countryside. The blue skies had clouds stirred into them, sunbeams lit up the foliage. The heat was a gentle embrace; the wind, but a shallow touch.

“So tell me, what happened. Doesn’t make any sense for me to ferry you around without a story. Besides I have things to do, the only reason why I’m doing this is cause…cause just tell me your story”, Anna said refilling her water jug in the spring’s cool waters.

“Well my mom and brother went to go get supplies from the settlement nearby”, Kiera paused, lost in thought. Striving to scrape together her memories. She continued, “I don’t remember where…but they said they wouldn’t be gone long. I should have stayed in the village.”
“The village? Or that pile of firewood we left”, Anna retorted.
Kiera’s eyes swelled with tears, “I could have stayed and helped them.”
“Well, I’m crunched for time…I can drop you off here and you can go back.”
“Oh no that’s fine”, Kiera shuttered. While sitting Kiera took noticed of a black box strapped to the back of the horse. Kiera asked what was in it, trying to get a peep. Anna slammed it shut and told her not to worry. She picked a few flowers near the spring’s banks, while Anna took a ration out of her bags.
“Closest settlement is BVOP, a small guild by the river…we should be able to get there by sundown”, Anna pondered. Anna chewed on her ration of skale meat while she scanned the horizon. Kiera presented the flowers she collected to Anna. Anna paused for a moment to acknowledge their beauty before devouring them, Kiera’s eyes widened in amazement. a
“Now why did you do that!”
“What else are they for”, Anna asked.
“Well…their pretty…and they were for you…cause your helping me”, Kiera said stumbling over her words.
“Girl, where I come from beautiful little things like you get eaten up.”
“Well that shouldn’t be…there must be something pretty where you come from.”
“Death? Betrayal? Abandonment? Have your pick,” Anna muttered, “I’m just surviving on a few grains of hope a sword.”
Kiera’s eyes changed focus to the ground. It wasn’t until now that Anna got a full look at the girl. She was short, and very small. She had short blonder hair and bright eyes. She had a dress on, ripped and tethered. Her hair was wavy; she was very adorable and had an honest air about her. But what caught Anna’s attention was a small ring on Kiera’s finger. It glowed a bright green.
“What’s that on your finger.”
Kiera’s attention immediately shifted from the ground to her hand. She started at her hand for a moment, as if amazed it was still there.
“This is a ring…”, she started, and “it’s a ring my mom gave me She said it would protect me from harm.”
Kiera looked from her ring to Anna, only to find her eyes glazed over. Anna quickly noticed her, “Get back on the horse, we got galloping to do.”

The pair, continued to the BVOP settlement. Throughout the ride, Kiera’s eyes danced over the landscape marveling its magnificence. She would try to start conversations with Anna, while Anna tried to ignore her the best she could. Kiera would go on about animals and would talk about how her and her mom would drink cinder together. Kiera was ambitious enough to ask Anna many question about her past, all of which Anna ignored. Before sunset, they were both at the gates of the BVOP settlement. The rolled into town and before they know it refugees swarmed the duo. Many of which recognized Kiera and had heard the news of the vanquished demon.
“There she is! The one who killed the demon!”
The crowd would cheer. Anna would bow her head in their condolences.
Kiera dismounted the horse to talk with some of the refugees of the village.
“Where are my mom and brother? Have you seen them?”
They would all respond that they hadn’t seen her mom and brother. She began to frantically search for someone that would know the whereabouts of her family. Many confessed that the officers of the settlement might know where they were. Anna reluctantly followed the child, throughout most of the town in search of an officer. A shady man pulled them a side. He led them into a dark alley. He hushed them as they tried to ask questions; finally after a minute he turned to face them.
“You shouldn’t be asking questions about BVOP”, He said fiercely.
“But the people said they knew where my mom and brother were”, Kiera said impatiently.
“Why shouldn’t we be asking about BVOP, and for that matter why should we be listening to you”, Anna boasted. The man, understood her cautiousness, he took off his cloak from under which a long black cape with a golden sun materialized…

The Calm Before the Storm
Chapter 5

A women over a body....
A tethered corpse…as she prays….
Tears mix with blood…

Hoping for another drop of life…
Another breath of vitality…
Salt crevices stain her face…

A brilliant light overwhelms her…
She gasps in awe…
A radiant and iridescent figure stepped toward her…
Its body flawless…wings abroad….
It held its hand out

And the corpse began to reanimate…

The wounds mended…
His face give up its rigor…
The pale flesh brightened with blood…
The women rejoiced…

But the deity glared…

Even though the black cape blended into the surrounding darkness, the sun in the middle showed brightly. It was a beacon in the gloomy alley. The man moved himself closer to Kiera and Anna, and then leaned in close.
“I’m a member of a guild that does business with this settlement”, He started, and “we’ve always been good trading partners however, as of late, the leaders of this township have been disappearing. Along with the members! Nobody has taken alarm to this mysterious activity”, He stopped to make sure that no one was around.

He continued, “Its more then just the leaders of this town, but some of the members have been replaced…. seemingly.”

Kiera’s eyes flickered with worry, and Anna interjected, “But why do you think people wouldn’t be noticing their ‘leaders’ vanishing? What I’m try to ask is…what do you think is going on?”

The man’s face got even more serious then before, “We really don’t know…but like I said I was sent her to gather information. When I heard that your family was missing”, He glanced at Kiera, “I just figured you could be a leader of some sort.”

“Well…if missing people is are we’re looking for…then how do you suspect we go about finding then”, Anna said standing firm.

The man paused to gather his words. He glanced at the skies and then turned back to Anna, “Well…I’m guessing we could track them in some way?”

“But where could they have gone? If they are the leaders you would think everybody would know where they were at”, Kiera said…trying her best to become part of the conversation.

“Well that’s just it. If these high end authorities are missing, considering they are farming gold or running members, and nobody is taking notice then that means nobody wants to take noticed”, Anna turned her gaze to the streets glaring at all the townsmen going back and forth.

“Are you trying to suggest some sort of conspiracy”, the man said in awe.
“No shit…to think they send people like you to do detective work”, Anna retorted, “well anyways yaw look like your going to be in good shape, I’ll leave the kid with you good luck.”
Kiera’s face flushed red, and tears formed at the brims of her eyes.
She struck Anna in the side to get her attention as she began walking away, “I thought you were gonna help me!”
“Help you get to the city, all that other stuff…I don’t have time for that”
Kiera gasped Anna’s cuirass, but Anna continued on her way. Yet the gleam of Kiera’s signet caught her eye once more…and she unwillingly decided to stay. Something about the signet…mesmerized her…it moved something deep inside of her…maybe it was the deep rooted erg to protected…or the willingness to aid the unfortunate…or perhaps is stirred something hidden in her…a feeling she could hardly recall.

“So sunlight dude…where do you think these vanishing people went”, Anna groaned.
The man checked the skies quickly, “I should know in a few.”
“What do you mean”, Kiera said trying to find what he was looking at. Just then a hawk swooped down from a nearby building and landed on the man’s arm.
“This is how,” he said stroking the bird’s deep dark plumage. The falcon gazed intently back forth between the faces. It had a small piece of cloth in its beak. Anna and Kiera lend in close to examine the cloth.
“This looks familiar”, Kiera said looking at the small piece of fabric. She looked at it more closely before her face went into shock, “that’s the same thing we use in our villages dresses.”
“Sweetie, cloth is used in almost all clothes”, Anna said shrewdly.
Kiera was taken aback then started to shake and point at the cloth. A tiny ring fell out from one of the ripples of the rag. The ring dropped to the ground and glowed a marvelous shade of green. Kiera gasped and quickly put the ring next to hers.
“Its my mom’s”
There was an awkward pause between the three. The man broke the silence, “Well if your mother was one of the taken, then this is our only clue. Horus here,” he pointed to the falcon, “can lead us back to where he found it.”
“Well lets get started in the morning then”, Anna said.
“But Anna my mom and brother”, Kiera mumbled.
“Well the way I see it…we can go all the way to where that bird found the ring. When we get there we’ll be tired as hell and who knows what we’ll run into.”
Kiera tried to smile, but Anna could tell she was anxious to be reunited with her family. Anna grabbed her hand and led her back into the town. The man agreed to meet them at the edge of town the next day. With an adventured waiting ahead of them Anna and Kiera stopped at a boarding house for a night’s rest…

A woman over looked the settlement. With keen eyes she scanned the streets from the forest edge. She frowned when she saw the man with the golden cape. But part of her was thrilled with the sight of this man. This should be fun, she thought, I have my orders...With that Laydee vanished off into the night.

A Prayer For Passage
Chapter 6

A women over a body....
A tethered corpse…as she prays….
Tears mix with blood…

Hoping for another drop of life…
Another breath of vitality…
Salt crevices stain her face…

A brilliant light overwhelms her…
She gasps in awe…
A radiant and iridescent figure stepped toward her…
Its body flawless…wings abroad….
It held its hand out

And the corpse began to reanimate…

The wounds mended…
His face give up its rigor…
The pale flesh brightened with blood…
The women rejoiced…

But the deity glared…
It snatch its hand back…
And the corpse fell back to the ground…

Lifeless and still…

The morning came quickly, Anna rose to meet Kiera but found she wasn’t there. With more vigor then she intended she hastily began to search for her. Frantic in her endeavor she stormed the dorms looking for the little girl, all to find her in the parlor sipping from a small mug.
“Free breakfast”, Kiera said sipping from her mug, “if I don’t get my daily coffee I get grumpy.”
Anna swiped the cup away from Kiera and guzzled it down, “Grumpy she saids…”

The two went to the town’s edge to meet the man they had see the previous day. They came to the meeting spot, town’s edge by the bridge. Kiera looked around quickly then gazed back to Anna who was ushering her horse along with her. Anna stopped and sat down; they waited for the man to show. Time passed and passed, and still the man had not come to meet the.
“Ms. Anna do you think the man forgot about us”, Kiera asked fiddling with her ring.
“Sweetie I’m not to sure, but a honest looking fell’a like that don’t just go back on their word”, Anna said still looking for the man. They waited for a few more minutes. The mornings dew was still crisp and the air was moist and damp. A deep fog shrouded the bridge.
Anna stood up then turned to Kiera, “No use in sitting here, might as well look for the guy.”
“But how will we know where to look?”
“Campfire smoke doesn’t mix too well with the fog,” Anna sniffed the air, “given the wind, he prolly camped over the bridge.”
The two continued over the bridge. The fog fastened itself to the conduit, cutting off the view from either side. Slowly a mass could be made out in the dense shroud. The man came running too them yelling at the top of his lungs. But no noise came out…Anna and Kiera could only make out his frenzied expressions of fear.
Kiera clutched to Anna’s side, “Ms. Anna why is he doing that.”
Cautious to proceed Anna held Kiera and the horse at bay, “Get on the horse Kiera.”, She whispered.
“What”, Kiera struggled to hear Anna. The fog engulfed the man and quickly rushed towards Anna and Kiera.
“GET ON THE HORSE NOW!”
Kiera still couldn’t hear Anna, but by then Anna had already slung her on to the horse. Horse raced to stay ahead of the approaching mist. Kiera grasped to Anna’s waist as they galloped along. Slowly the end of the bridge came into sight.
“Faster” Anna yelled cracking the reins. With one final push they emerged from the bridge untouched. The fog dissipated, as if nothing happened. They rushed back to the edge of town to where they felt safe.
“What was that?”
“I have no idea”, Anna said still in shock,” Why didn’t you get on the horse when I told you to?”
“You didn’t say that”, Kiera said puzzled. Anna thought for a moment.
“Someone called a hit on us.”
Kiera was startled at the thought. “But why us? We’re just looking for my family.”
“Well kid…I wish I had the answer. If we want to continue the such for that family of yours we’ll need to get across that bridge.” Anna looked at the bridge and saw the fog gathering around it again, “Looking like it wont be easy either. Apparently…sound cant travel through that fog. Whatever that guy was saying vanished along with it.”
“Like a Shroud of Silence?”
“Exactly, how did you know that.”
“My brother was practicing to become a martial artist…that was at least before the demon started terrorizing the village.”
Anna tried to change the subject, “So what were you practicing to be?”
“I always wanted to be a cleric…at least that’s what my mom was.”
“What kind techniques did you learn”, Anna asked trying to sound interested.
“Not too many…” Kiera frowned.
“Anything to help us across this bridge?”
“Well…before classes ended…I was learning how to cleanse unholy areas. But only when absolutely needed, its really difficult. When an areas is ‘tainted’”, Kiera projected.
“Sweetheart that bridge is has tainted as Grenth’s asshole lets get to work”, Anna said without missing a beat. They arrived at the beginning of the bridge again, the fog still looming. The horse began to whinny in distress, and strived to calm her.
“All right Kiera...show me what you got,” Anna said softly. Kiera clasped her hands, and bowed her head. She began to utter words silently under her breath. Anna waited patiently for results. To her dismay none came…the fog was as dense as ever.
“Are you sure your praying to the right god”, Anna cracked impatiently.
“I’m sorry Ms. Anna, I’ll try harder, “ Kiera continued to pray. Anna sat anxiously waiting for something happen. She turned to snap at Kiera once more, but her signet caught her attention. It glowed a faint green, emerald like that of fresh spring leaves. Anna couldn’t harbor any anger toward this child, she became overcome with sadness as her own memories flashed through her mind. She turned back, and sat upright in her sattle. She, herself, murmured something under her breath. Then before her a grand light pierced through the fog. The fog collapsed on itself, and faded away. Kiera’s shield of light emanated over them guarding them from evil. She remained in focused as they began to cross the bridge. The trip over the bridge was quick, and they found themselves at an abandon campsite at the bridge’s end. In the campfire was a small black clothe. Anna halted the horse, and got off to investigate.

Kiera’s prayer subsided and the shield of light ceased. Kiera’s eyes wobbled in exhaustion. She remained on the horse, resting on the mare’s neck. Anna picked through the camps remains. She found nothing of interest and returned to the horse.
“Did you find anything Ms Anna”, Kiera asked.
“No, nothing. Whoever was her cleared out fast. If that fell’a on the bridge was the one from yesterday guess he wasn’t too lucky.”
Kiera frowned, “We have to find him…”
“Heck why don’t we save the whole world? First your village, then the town, then this guy…” Anna snarled. Kiera hushed herself, once again began playing with her signet ring. From up ahead Anna could see a bird circling the camp. She cupped her hands together and made a whistle. The falcon responded by landing on the camps ruined fireplace. It was the same bird the man had, its wing was broken. It limped toward Anna and Kiera. Kiera quickly got off, saying a couple words trying to mend its broken wing.

“Do you think we can still look for my mom and brother”, Kiera asked while tending to the birds wing. Anna shook her head. “That man found my mother’s ring…perhaps we can still track them with it?”
Anna surprised turned her glaze toward Kiera. Even through her helm Kiera could tell Anna was smiling.

Kiera took out a clothe from her pocket, within her mother’s ring. She handed it to the bird, and it took off into the sky. Quickly mounting the horse once more, the duo raced into the forest after the falcon.

Hours melted away to the thunder of the horse’s hooves. Anna and Kiera were in pursuit of Horus, the falcon who flew so swiftly amongst the forest’s canopy. Kiera held to Anna’s waist stead fast, her head tilted in thought, Anna boldly looking forward has they dashed through the forest. As they continued Kiera took notice of the black box strapped to the horse’s rear. Its obsidian surface glistened every time a seed of sunlight dropped from the canopy. Kiera found it dazzling, and wished to open the box…but the vigilant Anna would never allow it. So she turned thoughts to her mother and to her brother. How long had it been since she had seen them? It seem like yesterday, but it was surreal how could this be happening…every breath she took she hoped it would awaken her from some terrible nightmare. However as the steed ducked and dodged the branches chasing the wily bird reality slowly set in. Her eyes blistered in tears, but she tried to remain strong by focusing on fleeing falcon…

The falcon slowed itself and made its descent landing on the horse, startling it slightly. Anna brought the horse to a stop at a small merchant’s outpost, and dismounted to allow it a chance to eat.
“Why did the bird stop”, Kiera protested, “We should be moving!”
“The bird is tired honey, even with a broken wing it can only fly so much.”
“But its my mom and my brother! We must keep moving, we have to find them!”
“Uhhh sure…I’d love to run around like a moa with its head cut off looking for your family but I prefer a guide”, Anna quickly snapped.
“I don’t think you honestly care about them”, Kiera started. “I don’t even know why your doing this if it means nothing to you. You don’t understand what it means to lose something you love.”
Anna pawed her neck, and studied Kiera through her helm visor. Glanced at the bird once more, and then mounted the horse once more. If she only knew…
“All this bickering isn’t going to get anything done. If it makes you feel better I think the bird is rested…”, Anna looked at Kiera once more. She felt a sharp pain it seeing this child’s remorse so evident; Kiera’s eyes sparkled in a fiery bliss.

They dashed off into the forest once more after a few more minutes of silence…

“Ms. Anna I’m sorry for what I said, I didn’t mean it”, Kiera apologized as they rode.
“You don’t need to apologize. I’ve been doing what I do for so long, I just lose touch with myself…and need to be brought around once more”, Anna answered. They continued to talk, getting off onto tangents and Anna even managed to get Kiera to mutter up a laugh when a branch nearly knocked her off the horse. The bird soaring above started to squawk loudly. Anna and Kiera turned their eyes above them, then Anna scanned the forest line.
“Anna what wrong”, Kiera said frightened.
“We have company…how fast can you climb a tree”, Anna muttered. Kiera, quickly replied by scrambling behind then nearest tree. Horus continued to squawk above, and then suddenly he plummeted to the ground upon a flourish of arrows. Kiera gasped from her hiding spot, Anna quickly joined her a motioned her horse along with her. Over several trees and trail can been seen cutting through the forest. From down the train a line of soldiers was marching in formation. Behind this was a carriage from which howls and screams resonated. This carriage was lead by a tall slender woman mounted on a horse. She had a dignified look to her, her hair was shortly cut and most of her facial features we hidden under a mask that gave her a predator’s visage. Her eyes were as sharp as the blades that bejeweled her leather suit. From a distance she could be seen talking to one of the soldiers next to her. She and her horse ran ahead off into the trail while the formation continued its march.
“Kiera”, Anna whispered, “start walking backwards slowly and well try to sneak off.”
Kiera nodded and tried to slowly back away but a root snared her and she tripped into the horse. The horse gave a yelped in distress and ran off into the woods. The soldiers quickly averted their attention toward the woods. The carriage halted as well.
“Search the arena…kill anything that might be near”, shouted one of the soldiers.
“Anna quick we have to escape”, Kiera said frantically tugging on her cuirass.
“Well…I already tried the sneaky approach to this situation we see how that went, so I’ma just have to do what I do best”, Anna said unsheathing her sword. Kiera huddled back toward the tree while Anna maybe her way to the soldiers.
Anna calmly hopped on to the road in front of the soldiers.
“Its just a women”, a surge of laughter over took the soldiers. “She has a sword at that, don’t worry honey I haven’t been to a braffle in a while”, they started to advance toward Anna. Anna still stood unwavering.
The first soldier tried to seize her arm but quickly Anna snapped his arm into, with her hands. He screamed in pain, it was then when a group of men ran to attack Anna. Anna quickly maneuvered over, under and around their attempts at attacks. She retaliated with precise and powerful strokes. She would sever a man, fully clad in armor in half, with the ease one would use to cut through butter. Still they came, trying to trick her by flanking her but still would hastily use the severed limps of their comrades to hammer away at these assailants.
A soldier from the back lines yelled, “Archers take your mark…FIRE.”
Anna, foreseeing the siege, used a corpse to shade her self from the assault. The archers tried to ready but Anna had already slipped back into the forest.
“Stay valiant men! And KILL THAT BITCH.”
There was a crackle then a pop, and tree came tumbling down onto a row of archers. Anna resurfaced behind them and had begun to charge them. They attempted another barrage, but Anna unleashed a swarm of parries that made it look as if the arrows were grazing off her barely missing. The unit of archers where quickly dispatched. All remaining members of the squadron were standing back from the front lines. Anna stood, smiling beneath her helm, the soldiers clustering around the carriage. She started to make her advance when a sharp pain ran down her spine. She turned to see dragger wedged into her back. She pulled it out with a grunt. She turned to see the slim woman.
“Leanna of the Sword”, she said in a robotical manner.
“Vizu in the flesh I presume”, Anna said scratching her back. The woman was taken back by this and her eyes tapered into a glare. Anna continued, “You throw like a gaki by the way.”
“I have heard a lot about you. What is a warrior of your reputation doing out here? I believe you were on a mission dealing with a demon in southern Kyrta.” said the slim woman.
“I don’t think I should be the one asking the questions here”, Anna said gesturing toward the carriage.
“Doesn’t matter I wasn’t sent to question you”, the lady smiled grimly.

The warriors paused both composed facing the other. Muscles stiffened, senses tightened, and Anna gripped her sword tightly. Sweat trickled down her face, her hair matted. She breathed out heavily and focused her mind.

The woman stood, smiling, motioning towards Anna…malice in her every move

Laydee and The Healing Whisper
Chapter 8

A women over a body....
A tethered corpse…as she prays….
Tears mix with blood…

Hoping for another drop of life…
Another breath of vitality…
Salt crevices stain her face…

A brilliant light overwhelms her…
She gasped in awe…
A radiant and iridescent figure stepped toward her…
Its body flawless…wings abroad….
It held its hand out

And the corpse began to reanimate…

The wounds mended…
His face give up its rigor…
The pale flesh brightened with blood…
The women rejoiced…

But the deity glared…
It snatch its hand back…
And the corpse fell back to the ground…

Lifeless and still…

With mouth agate...
The woman wepted once more...
Pleading....and pleading....
For one last chance....

She held out her hand...

The women's sorrow...
The women's devotion...
The women's determination...
The women's hope...

The women withdrew her daggers, twirling them in hand. “Please allow me to introduce myself”, she paused to marvel the stilettos’ brilliance. “I am Laydee Fatality.”
Anna step forth to respond but Lady had already begun to engage her.

Quick was her dagger, much more so then Anna’s. Anna struggled to parry Laydee’s assault. Laydee’s siege on Anna was a never leading interlocking combination of swipes, sweeps, and even more ambitious and more boastful maneuvers. Anna saw an opening and lunged at the defenseless Laydee. However, Laydee repulsed the blade with hers and stepped in towards Anna. They we were locked in a power struggle each eager to resolve it with the other’s blood.
“So you’re doing the old cows dirty work”, Anna said from beneath her helm.
“You are foolish to think such matters concern you”, Laydee replied calmly.
Anna tried to shove Laydee back but upon contact a huge cloud of dust rushed into Anna’s eyes. Her eyes baked in pain from the smoke powder. Laydee seized the chance and charged Anna with her daggers at her side. Like a mighty ox Laydee tackled Anna and toppled the heroine to the ground. Anna swung her blade but it was to no avail the dust clouded her view. Laydee, was unfazed by the smoke, and floated through it like a banshee. Anna couldn’t protect herself against the unseen fury. Anna flailed and tried to get back to her feet and through the smoke Laydee pounced on her. Her daggers breached Anna’s armor, she could feel the slow trickle of poison being ejected into her veins. Laydee retreated back, as the smoke dissipated. She had a huge grin on her face.
“I am afraid you have lost Anna. That poison is from a blood weaver, I highly doubt you’ll be able to stand for much longer.”
Anna staggered to her feet, her wounds exposed. “Will survive,” she murmured, “I always do.”

Kiera watched with terror from behind the tree. She looked at Laydee, still smiling, and then back at all her troops watching the battle. She turned her attention to Anna, No no…. it can’t end like this…we’ve come so far. Stay strong Anna…I’ll protect you.

“Will survive,” Anna murmured, “I always do.”

Anna’s focus started to become intermittent, she begun to lose her grip on her sword. She scanned the field…she ignored Laydee laughing infront of her and her troops cheering. She turned her attention to the forest line, and she saw Kiera…whose face was illuminated by the steady pulse of her signet.

Laydee stepped forth to finish Anna off…time started to slow down…Laydee said a couple words…. but Anna didn’t hear them…see wasn’t paying attention…her gaze was fixed on Kiera’s signet…its brilliant green pulse was hypnotic…a dagger sped towards Anna’s heart…all was silent…. but Anna still heard something…a silent chant…an invigorating hymn…a healing whisper…

A soft wind blew throughout the night. The smell of pine was thick, and hung low over the alabaster glade. The snowflakes as bright as the stars trickled down from the sky, blissfully floating in the chilling breeze…The carriage pressed forth through the snow and up the mountain, hastily making its way to its destination.

Anna finally came to. A dozen filthy faces fixed their eyes on her their clothes were tethered and worn…the sincerity of their gaze bore the hardships that they had to endure. No one made a rush to help Anna up, they but stayed in their groups cluttering together for warmth. Only Kiera, who was on the far end of the carriage, made her way towards Anna. She took her seat next to Anna, and covered arms for heat. Anna, smiling from beneath her helm, scooted herself next to Kiera and put her arm around her. The little blonde headed girl leapt upon this action, she could barley hide a smile has she laid her head on Anna’s shoulder.

You did good kid…you did good…
It was then that the sweltering fire that burned so brightly in Kiera’s eyes finally dulled to a sweet blaze.

Time slowly passed by, outside the snowflakes fell at a steady pace blanketing everything in sight. Sounds of soldiers marching can be heard through the walls of the carriage. Kiera had fallen asleep but Anna remained vigilant. The members of the carriage were equally as observant all stared at one another with quick short glances before continuing to the next face. All was silent, the air was heavy with anxiety…finally Anna broke the mold.
“So where is this thing heading”, Anna asked. The group of people looked around to see who was brave enough to answer.
An older women holding her child replied, “We don’t know,” she took a moment to gather herself,” we’ve been in this wagon for a little more then a day..”
“Same here”, another replied.
“Me and my family have been here for a week at least”, a man sitting next to Anna said. The carriage busted into a dull roar, everyone discussing how long they had been incarcerated. Finally silence incased the group once more.
Anna looked outside, through a small set of bars, to get a look at where they might be. She only saw pinewoods and snow as they made their way up a summit. She turned back to the small crowd.
“Where are ya’ll from”, Anna said scanning faces once more. The group paused again, trying to figure out who would speak first.
“We’re from a small village outside of Lion’s Arch”, said the man with his family.
“I was with a group of nomads, that was at least before we could captured”, said another.
“We’re from the BVOP settlement,” said the women with the baby.
Anna’s curiosity peaked, and she looked outside once more only to see nothing.
“So I know how me and the girl got her, but how did you get her”, Anna said addressing the woman.
“Well I don’t know”, the woman wept. “It was late…and then I heard a sound and I went to go look outside. I saw a group of soldiers just going from house to house pushing people out into the street and ushering them into carriages. I had heard the stories of people vanishing in the middle of the night, but I never thought them to be true. Nor, did I believe that if they were true they’d be in this magnitude! I panicked,” she whispered clutching her baby closer to her breast, “I ran back inside to tell my husband and get my children.” The woman’s face went blank, she begun speak in a distant voice, “They were at the door when my husband got up…he went to confront them. He wasn’t much of match for them…they killed him…. right there…. they beat him and drew him out into the middle of the street and cut his throat. All I could do was watch, and cry…I pleaded with them…they took my two other children into another carriage. They left me with my baby, only him”, she looked deeply into the baby’s eyes before holding it even closer. Other people from the crowd confirmed her story with a small tale of their own. Anna turned her head only to see Kiera wide-awake. She looked at the women as she cradled her baby in her arms. Her tears made veins on her face; she sung a song under her breath.

A day ago we were in the settlement, Anna thought. We could have been there if we would have stayed another day…but the mystery on the bridge led us elsewhere.

“Ms. Anna what are we going to do”, Kiera said still looking at the mother and child.
“Nothing we can do honey…but wait,” Anna said looking outside once more. The snow had stopped falling, and the air was becoming dense with smoke. In the distances embers can be seeing burning.

A men broke the second wave of silence, “I heard we’re going to a work camp…a work camp we’re all the scum of Tyria are put…just waiting to wither away and rot.”
Some in the crowd let out gasps and others became infuriated.
“Why would you say something like that.”
“Don’t you realize the situation we’re in, you shouldn’t put those thoughts into our heads.”?
“That’s right, we have enough as is.”
Some of the group ranted on, but the man kept giving details of prisoners, slaves and the possible hardships that lie before them. However other of the group already had realized what the others were denying.
“He’s right”, the mother said, “they wouldn’t put us in here unless they had something in store for us.”
The crow went silent, some contemplated ways of escape, and others tried to reassure their love ones, others told stories of their lives, others said prayers but Anna and Kiera remained out of their prattle.

Anna looked out the window once more, and saw that the embers that had been so far before were much closer. The crowd had stopped talking to look out the window as well. They could make out a town on the horizon…a fortress stood next to a mass of war camps…. on the edge of a cliff…over looking a quarry…their hearts dropped.

Snow of Sorrows
Chapter 10

A women over a body....
A tethered corpse…as she prays….
Tears mix with blood…

Hoping for another drop of life…
Another breath of vitality…
Salt crevices stain her face…

A brilliant light overwhelms her…
She gasped in awe…
A radiant and iridescent figure stepped toward her…
Its body flawless…wings abroad….
It held its hand out

And the corpse began to reanimate…

The wounds mended…
His face give up its rigor…
The pale flesh brightened with blood…
The women rejoiced…

But the deity glared…
It snatch its hand back…
And the corpse fell back to the ground…

Lifeless and still…

With mouth agate...
The woman wepted once more...
Pleading....and pleading....
For one last chance....

She held out her hand...

The women's sorrow...
The women's devotion...
The women's determination...
The women's hope...

Willing to praise...
Willing to work...
Willing to sacrafice...
No price was too dear...

No love so true...

Love can compel one to do foolish things...
But is it not the heart that guides her...
No one is to say...

The carriage came to slow stop, the wooden tires whined in relief. The tenants of the cell looked at each other in distress. Kiera clung to Anna, as they rushed to look out the window.

“It’s a camp”, whispered one of the men.
“It looks just like a town”, said another.
“Where is everyone”, one questioned.

They all held their breath and strained to hear the outside commotion. They could make out voices and the crunch of the snow as the soldiers maneuvered through the snow. The loud sound came from the back of the carriage. The prisoners all rushed away from the door as it swung open, the winter chill rushed in afterwards. The door lie opened to the winter night, the flurries of snow rushed about. They sat staring out into the night, wondering what fate had for them next.

Then soldiers came out from the flurries and motioned them out of the carriage. Some of the women started to wail but the solider merely yanked them along. The soldiers pulled the prisoners out one by one until they got to Anna and Kiera.
“Come on you little brat”, the soldier said snatching Kiera away. Anna rose in protest but the soldier quickly unsheathed his sword. In her weaken state; Anna knew she didn’t have enough to fight the man yet the sword didn’t deter her.
“You better hand that child back”, Anna said limping toward the soldier.
“Lady, your lucky I don’t skin you alive right now”, the soldier stepped closer to Anna. Anna glared at him through her visor, he snorted in disgust and seized her arm. Anna tried to swipe her arm back but he easily overpowered her. The soldiers marched Anna and Kiera, along with the other prisoners, toward the camp. The fires that came from them pierced through the snow. The cold chilled them to the bone; each step was taken at the exchange of their vitality. Stop and die or continue and die? This was the choice that the prisoners mulled over as they marched. Some couldn’t stand the cold and tried to stop to rest. But the soldiers pushed them onwards. The cold claimed many of the prisoners; they fell to the ground with their faces as pale as the snow around them. In spite of this, the march didn’t slow…some tried to stop to help their loved ones…but. They were commanded to continue as the chill consumed their loved ones. Kiera kept glancing back at the bodies left in their wake…she could see the woman with the baby being dissolved by the falling snow…

They arrived in the camp, with less than half of the number they started out with. The camp was bustling with activity. Short soldiers with gleaming red eyes gazed over the icy wasteland, Dwarves Anna though, their attention turned to the coming crowd.
“So what do we have here”, said one of the patrols.
“The latest batch of prisoners”, a soldier replied.
“Good, escort them to hall”, the patrol officer glanced at their faces, “we’ll have to get them in uniform.”
The begun to march again. Kiera looked at Anna, only to see it contorted in worry. Anna caught her glimpse…but only turned her head in thought. This isn’t good…
As they went into camp dozens of slaves were seen bring ushered around by their dwarven capturers. The air was think with smoke, fires burnt in the middle of the intersections. The building we’re small and dingy, Anna could see other slaves being forced into their quarters. The soldiers lured them into a building with a grand hall and brought them before a giant stage. The soldiers disbanded and begun their leave. The dwarven soldiers stepped forward, each of them manning their post. Four thick columns all decorated in the skins and hides of slain animals supported the amphitheater. Kiera looked at these tapestries and décor in wonder, but to her horror, she realized the tapestries of animal skins were all outline with human teeth. The crowd remained hushed, and occasionally their eyes would hop to one another begging for a small spark of reassurance.
A trumpet sound and two soldiers marched onto the stage, one dwarven the other human. The human soldier was clad in thick armor staring out amongst the crowd through his visor, the dwarf was dressed in a thick fur coat and smiled while casually twisting his beard.
“Welcome to your new home”, shouted the dwarf. The crowd held their breath.
“You are now property of the Stone Summit, and will remain alive as long as we see fit. You will not work for your liberation but only because you swine don’t deserve much better”, the dwarf scanned the crowd once more to see reactions. As expected some burst into tears, others tried to riot but he only laughed.
“You will be inspected then you will be issued a uniform, you are to wear it at all times. You will be assigned living quarters. Role call will be held twice everyday at dawn and dusk. If any of the tenants of your living space go missing…the barrack will be eliminated”, the man said nonchalantly. The audience flinched in fear.
“We will begin inspection within the hour”, said the soldier on stage, “enjoy your last moments of freedom.”
With that the soldier and the dwarf left the stage after conveying a few more rules. The crowd was still shocked from what they heard. The details kept reeling over and over again. Some couldn’t take it and went insane with horror, screaming and rushing for an escape. They were slaughtered instantly. The demonstration served its purpose as an immediate deterrence for any more commotion. The time came for the inspection. Groups of other prisoners we ushered into the hall as well. The congregation was sorted in a heartless manner. Families were purposely split up, the young where confiscated, and the elderly were taken away. Anna, breathing heavily from her injuries, stood close to Kiera. Anna and Kiera were next in inspection. The Summit soldier made a motion to separate them, but Anna snatched Kiera back. The dwarf paused with disbelief, his crimson red eyes quickly tapered into a glare. He struck Anna in the side, she kneeled over in pain, Kiera rushed to her aid. But she was quickly pulled away from her. The dwarf and Kiera made a march off but were confronted by the soldier that had be on stage. A few words were exchanged and the dwarf threw Kiera to the ground, and marched off. Struggling to her feet she ran back to help Anna up, the soldier followed behind.
“Anna are you alright”, Kiera said aiding her to her feet.
“I’ve been better kid”, Anna said clutching her side. Anna turned her attention to the soldier, “What do you want?”
“I have orders”, he said coldly, “Follow me.”
With that he lead them out of the amphitheatre, accompanied by several soldiers. He led them along the snow-covered streets. Anna and Kiera struggled to keep up. The camp was dead silence, the fires had dimmed, and the moon hung its head low. The wind whistled passing in-between the barracks, as they did they sung a hunting tune. The melody was companied by the slow strung of anxiety and the low baritone of lost hope.

Soon they arrived at the fortress that Anna had seen from the carriage. It towered over the surrounding encampments, and hung partially over the cliff that over looked the quarry. The fort rested on a small mesa that was connected to the camps with a long bridge The soldier didn’t led them on the massive bridge but went on a path that led below it. They entered a set of doors that was below the fort’s colossal doors, beneath the bridge. As they continued down the corridor Anna begun to notice prison cells filled with a variety of different creatures. They snarled, hissed, and pleaded to the soldiers has they escorted Anna and Kiera pass them. After wandering through the labyrinthine for what seem like hours the soldier stopped and pointed to a heavy door. A guard stood outside the door, upon the command he opened the door. The soldier then shoved Kiera and Anna into the cell…

He laughed and smirked at their faces. “Welcome to Sorrow’s Furnace”, he chuckled.

Kiera hugged Anna tightly as they closed the door behind them…she wept as their foot steps echoed down the hall…

Ugh. I'm still not in. I better be glorious when I come in. Or something. Well good work, a little vivid on the description of the slave camps. It's a little TOO vivid, but it really makes you feel like you're there. You're pretty darn good at this Mighty. Keep up the good work.

The cell was cold and damp; an icy wind blew in from the cells window. The window over looked a vast cliff that plummeted into a nest of clouds. It was still night and the only light that illuminated the cell was the moonlight that seeped through the window. A bail of hay rested in a corner of the cell. Kiera and Anna pulled some hay beneath them and huddled into the corner. The wind whistled through the window, the moonlight only reached out towards the Anna and Kiera, the rest of the room lie in darkness.
“Anna are you alright”, Kiera said looking at the weakened warrior.
“Yes kid, I’ll be fine”, Anna let out a small groan of pain while trying to get comfortable.
Kiera pawed at her dress, the turned to Anna, “Do you think we’ll ever get out of here? Do you think I’ll see my mom or brother again?”
Anna turned her eyes out the window then looked back at Kiera. Kiera’s eyes burned with anxiety. “
Anna let out a sigh, “Kiera…we’ll find them just you wait”, Kiera turned her mind engaged in deep thought. Anna’s helm hid her frown, Just be ready for anything kid…

They shuffled to get comfortable amidst the cold stone. Anna moaned in pain once more.
”Why don’t you take off your armor Anna? Or at least your helm”, Kiera observed,” it’d be much easier to relax.”
Anna chuckled a bit, “I wouldn’t wanna ruin my mystique now would I?”
Kiera smiled, and begun to twirl her ring around her finger.
Anna paused. “Aren’t you cold in that dress”, she said trying to sound unconcerned. She fumbled over her words a bit, “Maybe you should... er…gather up a bit more hay and use it as insulation.”
“And ruin my devilishly good looks? I should think not”, Kiera retorted but she quickly followed it with a small chuckle.

Anna’s heart jerked with a sudden pain. Both familiar and distant, Poor girl she thought. She tries so hard to find little things to cling on for joy…even in such a perilous situation. She’s trying to distract herself Anna thought. Its hard to wash away so many years of pain…. but I see it burning in her eyes.

Kiera turned over to fall asleep. A maternal impulse overcame Anna and she brushed Kiera’s blackened hair out over her face. She quickly withdrew her hand. Before Anna turned to go to sleep she saw a small tear rush out of Kiera’s eye. It sparkled like a shooting star in the moonlight…

Poor girl…I know your struggle. I only wish I could find the joy you see in this world.

There was a quickly shuffling from the other end of the cell. Kiera and Anna quickly sat back up. They waited for a moment before hearing another sound of movement. In the darkness they could make out a shady shape shifting around in the gloom. A hand reached out of the darkness slowly creeping out as if to touch Anna. The hand fell short and touched the ground. Soon a figure emerged afterwards. Out of the darkness came a young man. He had short black hair and worn a tethered cardinal’s outfit. He was barefoot and had a thick piece of gauze wrapped around his eyes. His hands were beaten and battered, his arms bruised and speckled with contusions.

“Who are you”, Anna projected. The man slid back quickly, he huddled to himself.
“Is someone there? Please tell me there is,” he muttered to himself. Kiera crawled forth to approached the young man. She placed her hand on his, he flinched, but Kiera clasped it.
“Don’t worry we’re not going to hurt you”, Kiera said sweetly.
The man rocked back and forth silently for several moments but then replied, “What are your names?”
Kiera shot a glance at Anna. Anna leaned forward, “I’m Leanna that’s Kiera,” she said implying upon Kiera’s touch.
“I’m sorry for approaching you both with such caution, I’ve been in this prison for a month or so,” the man said, “but now that we’ve become acquainted my name is Ralph.”
“What are you doing here,” Kiera asked.
“I was kidnapped from a settlement a small ways from here,” Ralph paused, “back then I was whole; however, as you see weeks of torture haven’t been kind to me.”
“Why would they torture you?”
“I don’t know how long you have been here, but its just their way. They make you work all day only to torture you at night. Some they do it just for fun, others for information.”
“What did they want out of you,” Anna inquired.
Ralph paused to pat down his gauze, “ They wanted information about the settlement I came from, BVOP.”
Kiera’s eyes lit up in surprise, “We were just there! We were looking for my mother and brother, when a man came to tell us about the kidnapping.”
“A man talked to you about the kidnappings,” Ralph said puzzled, “Wha-“
“Yes”, Anna interrupted,” a man with a long black cape, don’t ask what his name was he didn’t give us one.”
“Well that’s a relief to hear,” Ralph said, “we were working with the man's guild to figure out the mystery behind these kidnappings. But it seems like I got a little more of this mystery then I bargained for….”
“What exactly is your standing in the BVOP settlement,” Anna asked.
“I was their leader…”, Ralph said turning his face to catch the night breeze. “I’m not much of a leader; I can’t even protect myself let alone my own people. The only things I heard now are terrible tales of this camp. I have failed my people…perhaps this is a befitting punishment.”
“Don’t say that…” Kiera motioned over to him, but Ralph had already withdrawn into his corner.
“Let the man sleep Kiera, we have the morning,” Anna said turning over to fall asleep.

Kiera scanned their prisoner once more, the reality was being to set in. She sighed heavly and gazed out the window. Will I ever find home…

She lie her head in a bed of hay and closed her eyes to fall asleep. As she fell asleep a small spark of light from Anna’s armor caught her eyes. She moved closer to investigate. A small book was sticking from one of the digits in her chain mail. Kiera artfully wiggled the book out of the crevice. She examined the book looking for any markings or writing.

Then she opened the small book and flipped through the pages.
And slowly a story unfold…

She held out her hand...

The women's sorrow...
The women's devotion...

The women's hope...

Willing to praise...
Willing to work...
Willing to sacrafice...
No price was too dear...

No love so true...

Love can compel one to do foolish things...
But is it not the heart that guides her...
No one is to say...

With a smile...
The deity laughed...
A dark chill flew over the woman...
But she stood unwavering...

A heart so strong...

A sharp pain erupted...
She wailed in pain...
Blood flowed like rain...

The ground became drunk with blood...

Like liquid water, the pages splashed over quicker and quicker their tales, their wonders breaching upon Kiera. Words were replaced with pictures, names with faces more and more Kiera became submerged into the journal. Something happened…Kiera breathing became faint…he eyes started to pound against its sockets, a small wind picked up and Kiera closed her eyes…

An altar...Kiera opened her eyes…she looked before her…she was in a different world. Kiera couldn’t move, she was but a spectator gazing out through another’s eyes. A man approached her, and said something-she couldn’t make out what. Kiera heard a faintly girlish laughter…

A rush of light overcame the visage

A small ring incased in a black box…cradled her arms. A sweet lullaby lulled in midair…it drifted off into a tender hum…the man came into the room…words were exchanged and he kneeled to kiss her. The time slowed…all was still…two hearts connected in a single beat…

A swoosh of sound blurred the image

A horse and a girl…the woman from before... but younger. Her hair rode the wind like wildfire. She embraced the horse then she whispered into its ear…it whinnied in glee. A father and mother kiss the girl….before she rode off into the glade…

Images faded...a cry pierced the night…

She smiled as she waved to them….three men walking off…into a war…into eternity…to their death…her mom and father only watched…patient…full of worry…fighting to hold back the tears…how long has it been…

A silent regret…

The man looked at the woman he had loved so much…she slept quietly…the moonlight caressing her check…he then turned his attention to a small crib…he walked out the door…the distance…though but a few inches at first…. turned into miles…as the door squealed in his departure…a pillow was stained with tears…

An ominous swarm over took the story…

Panting and panting…Faster and Faster…the woman and horse raced through the worlds. She looked behind her has she weaved between branches.
“Faster…”, She cried. The horse’s hooves clattered against the vines and foliage. The voiced behind grew louder, and figures raced through the darkness. They breach the forest line and continued along the coast. They dashed up and down the rocks on the shoreline, and began their ascent up a tall outcrop…arrows and flares flashed passed her head.
“Come on girl”, she beckoned. She and the horse continued up the outcrop…

A fire and scream…

Bodies….dead….souls….torn…hearts…devoured, the three men lie in tethers before the women…she hit and struck them with such selfish live…Why…she asked…why now? Her own blood was spilled…and it was something she wouldn’t forget…a sound roared from a fire….figures raced toward her…she clasped the men’s hands once more…placing a kiss on each on…she mounted her steed and raced off into the woods…

A light flickered

A girl once more…running through the meadow…chased by a little boy…he tackled her into a bushel of wildflowers…their seeds soared up into the air…another boy tackled the first, they rough housed as the sun set…the girl rolled in laughed…the sun finally lied its head to rest…and the stars appeared in sparkling beauty…the three of them danced under their light….and one last boy emerged to call them home…they walked hand and hand down a dirt road…the night breeze carried their laughter for miles…

Finally a scene came into focus

The women and her steed raced up the outcrop; high over the waves…the Sea of Sorrows pummeled the cliffs maliciously…the night clouds swirled in content. Finally the outcrop reached its zenith…the horses hooves embracing the cliff’s edge…the dark figures didn’t slow their advancement…they howled as they closed in…but the women wasn’t scared she fastened her arms around the mare’s neck…in her exhaustion…she could only mutter a few more words…
“Your all have left Emily”
They plunged into the sea…

The book shut violently. Deep in thought Kiera returned the book to its sheath. She closed her eyes, still burning from the book’s dazzling tales. Her thoughts were saturated; thick and drawn out…she fell asleep quickly…

She could hear a distant laughter in the nighttime breeze

The morning light slipped through the window and woke Kiera. Walked over the window, standing on her tiptoes, she peered out to see if she could see anything of interest. It was of no use the window only overlooked a vast cliff, which plunged into a frothy mix of clouds. Her mind was wreathing in thought from what she had read the night before. How did it all fit together she thought. Kiera sat back down next to Anna, she decided that she should begin healing Anna’s wounds…something she had neglected to do the night before. She held her hand out, it begin to glow a heavenly light, and she started to pass it over Anna’s arms and legs. Anna quickly awoke, he hand quickly snared Kiera’s. Kiera gasped in fright.
“Oh I’m sorry Ms. Kiera I just wanted to help,” Kiera said in shock.
“You shouldn’t sneak up on me like that kid”, Anna muttered. She moan in pain has she withdrew her hand.
“Please allow me to heal you.”
“That won’t be necessary”, Anna groaned. She struggled to set herself up.
“Oh come on your being stubborn now, just let me help,” Kiera started heal Anna’s limbs. Anna snarled and Kiera ignored her, something that surprised Anna.
“I’m not gonna stop just because your being thickheaded.,” Kiera said continuing to chant a silent healing prayer. Anna laughed. By now Ralph had begun to stir in his corner of the cell.
“What’s going on”, he asked.
“I’m just patching up Anna here”, Kiera said with a small tinge of pride.
Ralph motioned back and forth, as if looking for something. He then pawed his way over to Kiera and Anna. He placed his hands on Anna’s helm.

It was then, in the morning light, that the tenant’s appearance became clearer. His brown hair was short and clean cut. The injuries Kiera and Anna had seen the day before look at the more worse in sunlight. He appeared to be a boy twelve years of age, he was rather slender with sharp facial features, the majority of which was covered with his eye wrapping. His cardinal suit was a dull red and around his neck was a tiny blue clothe which bore the insignia of a flaming palm. Kiera glanced at Anna while Ralph put his hands on Anna’s helm.

“I sense no wound only trickery”, Ralph said with drawing his hands. Kiera shot a perplex look at Anna. Anna chuckled a bit, she twirled he hand and the illusion was lifted. Her battered limbs quickly assumed their natural healthy state. She gained back her range of motion and she didn’t moan as she sat up.

“What happened”, Kiera said in amazement.
“I tried to tell you, it was only an illusion, how else were we suppose to get in here”, Anna said.
“Wait I don’t understand…” Kiera tilted her head in thought.
“That falcon lead us right too that slave carvan…I just figured it was the best way to find out where it lead.”
“So that fight with Laydee didn’t faze you.”
“Oh no she kicked my ass”, Anna twinged. Kiera went back to healing her limbs.
“Where did you learn how to make illusions?”
“I learned a couple tricks along the way, an arcanist taught me after I helped rid him of this wizard near Lion’s Arch.”, Anna answered.
“So its like magic,” Kiera said in wonder.
“Your spells are just the same,” Anna said coldly, “so boy how do we get out of here?”
“Are you talking to me”, Ralph said timidly.
“You’re the only one with balls in here…. and not the metaphorical ones,” Anna snapped. Kiera snickered.
Ralph turned beet red, “Sorry mam! But, yea, I thought it was pretty obvious that there is no way to get out of here.”
“But this is a slave camp, why aren’t we slaving,” Anna asked.
“I’m not sure they normally would have got us by now, perhaps they are busy. “Ralph thought for a moment, “we normally have lunch soon, I hope they remember to come get us.”
“’Come get us’ what do you mean by that,” Anna said with interest.
“At lunchtime they bring you to a courtyard they make announcements at this time and usually have role call. As for lunchtime, they let people eat and socialize to a degree. It really adds to your punishment to know that the people that torture you one moment will turn out and dangle such freedoms in your face.”
“How many people are usually at lunch at one time,” Kiera asked.
“Everyone…it’s actually quite astounding.”
“How long is this assembly.”
“About three hours.”
“What do they announce, it can hardly be anything anybody wants to hear”, Kiera frowned.
“Actually, announcements are probably one of the most exciting part of the day, Sometimes people are chosen and are allowed to leave the camp all together! They say only the strongest most hardworking people are allowed to leave. In a way what they tell you are lies…saying that there is no way out, “ Ralph laughed at the thought, “their just testing your drive is all. In a place like this it’s hard to come by.”
Ralph paused for a moment.
“However, some announcements don’t receive as much welcome. Those that don’t meet work quotas are carried always…Dwayna knows where. I’ve had some of my closest friends taken away; I wonder why they haven’t taken me yet. I’m unable to work…it should be me instead of them who has to endure that torment.”
“Well rolling in your pity wont help you,” Kiera boasted. “We have to do something.”
“You’re starting to sound like me,” Anna smiled.
“But what can we do”, Ralph pleaded.
“How many people do you think will be at the assembly, guards and all give me a guess”, Anna said formulating a plan.
“I don’t know I can only go off what I hear”, Ralph mulled the numbers over, “ I’ll say about ten thousand.”
“Now how many do you know are from BVOP?”
“From what I’ve gathered I’m going to guess about seven hundred.”
Anna continued to think to herself.
“That’s not enough is it”, Kiera guessed.
“Just means were gonna have to take a different approach,” Anna answered.
“What is your plan, perhaps I could make a suggestion”, Ralph questioned.
“We need to cause some sort of uproar. Upset the place we can make our escape and get to the bottom of this. Where’s your standing in the community Ralph?”
“Well, I don’t work so a lot of people don’t like me for just that. However, I heal some of the workers from their injuries in the quarry at these assemblies so I would say for the most part that people know me.”
“You need to speak with them, tell them we need to rise up and overthrow these gnomes.”
“I wish it would be that easy, here people wouldn’t even think about doing such a thing. The consequences are too great.”
“If there’s one think I know it’s that hope and opportunity are great playmates,” Anna said turning her gaze at Kiera. Kiera smiled.
“So what do you propose”, Kiera said just finishing healing Anna’s arm.
“Today we’ll alert people to our plan,” Anna said glancing back and forth between her and Ralph. “We’ll have to make sure people are willing to fight to get out of this joint. Ralph since you know the most people try and spread the words to the BVOPers and all others whom you trust. I’ll look around to see if there are any weak points in the assembly area, and to check out where the guards will be. Kiera you should probably stay close to Ralph”, Anna then looked a Ralph, “make sure she stays safe.”
Kiera smiled then placed her hand on Ralph’s leg; he twinged a bit then relaxed.
“Look for the strong and for the brash, we need strength to bust out of this joint.”
“I’ll search for my ally in combat, Gorwad then. Considering he is still alive.”
“Whose that,” Kiera asked.
“He was our settlement’s champion. He and other would protect us from outside threats, which had become increasingly often in the pass months. However, he and I were captured and brought here. They had us both in this cell at a time, but then they separated us after he found out what they did to me.”
“I’m sorry for the lost of your friend”, Kiera frowned.
“He was more then that, he was my brother”, Ralph let out a sob.
A tear shot out of Kiera’s eye. Kiera then looked over at Anna…through her visor beneath the helm, she could see Anna’s eyes start to glaze over.

When will this stop…
