Just remember that gliders will only take you from a high point to a low point but not from a low point to a high point.

The MMO Archeage (do not play as it sucks), another Korean game, has gliders but you can only fly for two minutes till the glider vanishes; and if you happen to be way up in the air, it will be a long fall followed by instant death. Hopefully there will be no glide timer in this Guild Wars 2.

Or it can be used as a cushion for when you hit the ground.

When you learn to ride updrafts, you can get a boost up higher.  It won't be all down.  Generally down, but updrafts will give you a boost back up.
