Foul, Deragatory, Hate Speak in AC
Last night while do a post Arborstone run wrap up with a guildie and a former guildie we see a message on AC that has no place there. The person said "get on vent you cunts". One of my officers immediately took offense to the term and asked them to not use that term in AC. I, being a GL, jumped on and said there is no place for language like that in open AC. This person didn't really apologize but just moved on and didn't press the issue and neither did we.
I have set guidelines for my members that any kind of language that may be offensive to another player shouldn't be used in open chat. Yes, the occasional F-Bomb will drop, but we don't make a practice of using it in GC. We do not tolerate any kind of hate speak, belittling, mean spirited, or other language that makes our members feel uncomfortable.
There is no need for language like this in general chats. Using it in private / team chat is fine, but where it can be seen by everyone, no thank you. It would be detrimental to our alliance for new members to come in and see that kind of language flying around. You would never go to a room full of people you don't know and say things like that, so don't here.

I completely agree. There is no reason whatsoever for someone to use sexist or racist terms in the game, on the forum, or in vent. I believe that something of this sort deserves a swift kick out the guild door and a permanent ban from joining other guilds in the alliance.

Simple answer; take a screenshot of the incident and email it to me, post it or do whatever you gotta do. The trouble-maker(s) will be handled, warned and or banned.

And maybe post the name of the offender (main name) + why.
So i wont happen again. They can change a different person but if you use the main name the change gets smaller.

And to that end Akroma, if the offender is not in AoL, they can be summarily kicked from the guild they are in by an officer or leader who is looking at the shot.

No, first you let them know it is not acceptable on AC. If they continue to do it after you've discussed it with them. Snap a screen shot, post it here, and let their GL do the rest.
For some, common sense just escapes them.

Re: Foul, Deragatory, Hate Speak in AC
I must admit I swear more than most people, but it is never directed at anyone. In my oppinion its ok to swear but not if it is DIRECTED at someone.
eg. "wow, thats shit" - is ok
"wow, your shit" - is not ok
Perhaps if this guidline is followed, similar cases can be avoided whilst still maintaining a casual athmosphere...
if i am wrong please correct me...

Shank that's my personal policy as well. As I talked to Pendragon today, cursing can be used with no insulting manner intended. Sexist and Racist terms are used in two way: to insult someone or to give an example of someone who used the term to insult.

Re: Foul, Deragatory, Hate Speak in AC
I was the officer that took offence. While I am far from a prude, (ask anyone!) I have a problem with the "c" word, and it was totally unnecessary in this context. I swear as well, although I try to keep it to a minimum. Usually things can be said with less abrasive words such as "crap", etc. While I do not get offended when someone is frustrated and swears, any language directed at other members as this was is unacceptable.
We tell new recruits that one of our guidelines is "be polite in guild/alliance chat". We nip it right in the bud if we catch someone acting inappropriately, and I don't care how old they are.
Use some common sense, for god sakes.
On a related note, I have discussed this with some others -- it's easy to be rude when you sit behind a computer. There are generally no consequences of real import. It's much harder to be rude to someone's face. So think before you type -- would you say this to someone's face? If you wouldn't, then don't type it. Simple. If you have any social skills at all, apply them to open forums such as guild/alliance chat. The rest of us will be grateful.

We need to add to this rule that we can no longer chit-chat, joke, tease, say anything that may offend a piece of wood, and I think there were other things said as well.

i think that really vulgar language has several alternatives
like "oh $h!t" can be replaced with "oh snap" or somethin like that
u get where im goin...
i personally dont use such language except with ppl i know very well
never used it in public

Israfil Quoted a song (I want your S-E-X or something) And the reactions were just absurd. Anybody who knows him wouldnt take anything like that seriously, yet Donny had a 10-15 min ongoing conversation about it that AC would have been better with a simple "hello" to israfil because he just got on and was being dramatic in his arrival as always.

I came in with the "I want your S-E-X" intro, and got blasted that that was not needed and unneccessary. How I need to be sensative to what others blah blah blah.
I could understand it if I came in saying "i want to F**k you in the @ss with a shampoo bottle at a medium pace"

Yeah israfil is a cool guy. He was one of the members that was in ZoA when I was an officer in ZoA and he came to AoL with me when ZoA left. He is just a joker and means no harm to people. Yeah some people can get put off by jokes but that applies to jokes in general. So I personally vouch that israfil means no harm and definitely does not mean to offend people.

Re: Foul, Deragatory, Hate Speak in AC
I think people are getting off point here. My point, and Donnilee's point is that some people just don't stop and think before they type something. Since everyone is kind of missing this, the statement that started this whole thread off was "Come on you cunts, get on vent!!"
Everyone admits to perhaps saying things in AC that are adult. There are just certain trigger word that should never be used. The "C" word is one of them. It is a word that is demeaning to most women, and that's why she took offense. My thinking is that any statement made that is directed at another individual or group that can be seen as hateful has no business in AC.
Dropping the F-bomb happens. I'm not arguing that. Americans are more hung up on it than the Europeans are. Yes, language filter is a wonderful thing and for those who are offended by such language should use it.

I completely agree Pendragon. I remember when this thread started, I believe I was talking to you and we agreed that when people curse, like everyday curse words, usually it is an expression of frustration or anger, not some kind of hate speech towards someone. But other words, such as the n word or the word in the statement you provided are used solely for the purpose of hate.

Keep it fun or quit playing
Look...as a prospective member...I also take offense to this.
You can be a JOKING asshat to your guildies (aka friends) but you DON'T do this to your alliance.
Serious...I'm a miserable salty bastard. It's that LOVABLE quality of mine that's kept me in any of the guilds I've joined that are adult enough to handle me being an asshat.
I don't shit on members, and I don't talk shit outside of guild channels. When I DO talk shit, it's to my friends, who KNOW i'm talking shit, and know that if I talk shit to you that means you're my friend.
If I DO offend, I'm the first to back down and apologize...It's a game...we came together to play said game, but only as long as it's fun. Keep it fun.

As a salty pirate myself...I've gone off the end of offensive more than once.
The defining moment is in questioning, if there was malice involved.
I'm the first to backpedal and accommodate.
I DO tend to avoid 'Disney style famdamily friendly alliances/guilds'
But...a guild needs to be balanced. You either recruit for one and exclude the other, or the reverse.
Crick and I learned this with a quickness running a WoW guild (gawd help us)
But....to quote the late Col Sanders....."I'm too drunk to taste this chicken"
